So I Googled Ubisoft support, found their site and submitted a question regarding the issue, including one of the 2. There are apparently only 3 threads in the entire Ubisoft section of that forum that contain the string 'Rocksmith' in either the title or body of the thread, and none of them are about this issue. Turns out Steam doesn't have a forum for the game specifically, just a catchall forum for all Ubisoft products. Google? A couple people seem to report similar issues, but no one has anything close to a solution. Unfortunately, it directs me to what appears to be a nonexistent website, (specific URL:). First step, UPlay has a 'Help' button prominently displayed on its main screen.

I click on it, similar process as before, going through a few pop up windows until it hits something about 'Connecting to Ubisoft Server' or somesuch, at which point it hangs for a few seconds and then crashes to desktop, again. Game launches, gets to profile screen, and hey! The profile I created is sitting there, so I guess that actually worked. Let's launch it again! But this time, since UPlay is still open from the last launch, I'll try and launch it by hitting the giant Play button in that. It wouldn't be the first time a newly installed Steam game has done something weird upon first launch. Okay, 'Creating Profi'- suddenly back to desktop and 'Rocksmith2014.exe has crashed, blah blah you can attempt to do nearly useless stuff because you have Visual Studio installed (namely debug the program)'. Oh, you want me to create a profile? That's perfectly sensible, let me type in my name here and press Enter. Opening screen fading looks a little laggy, but I have a million things open on this computer and it's the first launch of the game so no big deal. I clicked on Rocksmith 2014 in Steam for the first time, which in turn launched UPlay, which I apparently already had an account for despite me being unable to remember the last Ubisoft game I played on PC, and eventually launched the game. if I get the game to launch I may be posting another question about the game not picking up any guitar sounds).

It took a long time for my Win 7 PC to recognize the cable, but it did, and when I plucked some strings it appeared to recognize sound coming in (although playing it while recording via the Windows sound recorder didn't produce anything even close to audible. I dusted off my bass guitar- poor thing hadn't been touched in years I've been a neglectful musician- and plugged it into the proprietary Ubisoft cable thing. Both are activated on Steam, but only RS 2014 is installed. I recently purchased RS 2014 on Steam, along with a physical copy of RS1 (to get the cable and to justify spending the extra $10 on Steam to enable the ability to get all the RS1 songs) at a brick and mortar store.
